AI assistants now book hotels: 18 of 97 independent hotel websites we checked were broken

On Aug 27, 2026, Google began rolling out hotel booking inside AI Mode, its chat-style search, to U.S. users [1]. The “Continue on Google” button that completes a booking appears next to Google’s integrated partners, and the launch list names ten: five hotel chains and five booking sites, from Booking.com to Trip.com [1].

So the AI hotel booking that exists today runs through hotel chains and through the online travel agencies independents already pay commission to. An independent motel can still appear in the lists AI Mode builds from Google Maps and the web [2]. A guest who books inside the chat books with a partner; a guest who clicks out reaches your website or your front desk.

Travelers are already asking. In Google Keyword Planner, “ai trip planner” averaged 1,900 U.S. searches a month and “ai travel agent” 1,000 over the year to September 2026, against 30 for “ai hotel booking” (pulled Oct 21, 2026).

SiteMinder, a hotel software company that says it connects 53,000 hotels, reports that eight in ten travelers want AI help while they book [3].

We checked what a crawler can read on 97 independent hotel and motel websites on Oct 21, 2026. None of the 68 robots.txt files we could read blocked the AI search crawlers. The bigger leak was simpler: 18 of the 97 listed web addresses were broken. Below: how assistants find hotels, where the booking lands, and a check for your own site.

AI assistants build their hotel lists from three inputs

Google says the travel plans AI Mode builds bring together real-time Search data for hotels, details from Google Maps such as photos and reviews, and information from sites across the web [2]. The diagram below shows those inputs feeding the assistant, next to the guest’s question. Your website is one input of three, and it counts only if a crawler could read it.

ChatGPT and Perplexity read the web with their own crawlers. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search answers, and a site that blocks it in robots.txt will not be shown in those answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link [4]. Perplexity says PerplexityBot does the same job for its search results [5].

Training crawlers are a separate switch. Blocking GPTBot tells OpenAI not to use your pages to train its models, and OpenAI treats that setting as independent of OAI-SearchBot [4]. Google-Extended does the same for Gemini training and for grounding in Gemini apps, and Google says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search [6].

Google Search itself asks for nothing new. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet [7].

Where AI hotel booking lands decides who takes a cut

The assistant hands the guest a short list of hotels with links, and every path ends in one of three places: an OTA or booking partner, your own booking page, or a call to your front desk. Only the first, an online travel agency (OTA) or a similar partner, takes a commission on the room.

In AI Mode the guest completes the booking on Google with Google Pay, and the hotel or booking platform acts as the merchant of record [1]. None of the ten launch partners is an independent hotel, so a booking for an independent’s room made inside the chat goes through one of the travel sites.

Google’s regular hotel search already has a cheaper door. Its Hotel Center help says the hotel details view shows the hotel’s phone number and a link to its website, and lists free booking links under “All options”, where clicks cost nothing [8]. Paid booking links carry an “Ads” badge [8].

Hotel software companies are building other bridges. In April 2026 SiteMinder said its Demand Plus service would show hotels inside ChatGPT and Claude, where a traveler sees live rates and books on the hotel’s own booking page [3]. Its Channels Plus route keeps the whole booking inside the partner’s platform instead [3].

The phone is the third exit, and a booking taken there pays no OTA. Motel4 sells an AI phone receptionist, so we have an interest in this exit. Our older post on why the phone is your best direct-booking channel covers what to say when that call comes in.

In 97 independent hotel websites, robots.txt was rarely the problem

We started from the 35 city datasets we built in June from OpenStreetMap, the volunteer-made world map [9]. We kept every hotel, motel, hostel and guest house with no chain brand tag and a website, dropped links to chains, hotel groups and booking platforms, and kept one row per domain: 97 websites in six states.

Our checker named itself as a bot and asked each site once for its robots.txt file and its homepage. Of the 68 sites with a robots.txt file, none blocked OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot. One blocked GPTBot and one blocked Google-Extended, which govern AI training. Six carried a content-signal line, the format Cloudflare’s managed robots.txt setting writes [10].

The bigger problem was the address itself. Of the 97, 18 were broken: 7 domains no longer resolved, 3 failed a secure connection, 2 showed a certificate for a different domain, 2 answered “page not found”, 3 were parked for sale and 1 returned an almost empty page. Three more refused our checker.

A broken address hurts twice. A crawler cannot read a page that does not load, so the assistant has nothing from you to work with. And a guest who taps the website link from a map lands on an error instead of your rates.

Of the 76 homepages that loaded, 13 had no phone number anywhere in the page text. And 48 carried no schema.org lodging markup, the Hotel or Motel types that label a page as a place to stay [11]. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features but asks that important content be available as text [7].

Run the same check on your own site

Most steps take a few minutes and need no developer.

  • Open the website address from your Google Maps listing on a phone. It should load your own page over https with no security warning.
  • Look up when your domain renews and turn on auto-renew. Seven of the broken addresses in our check were domains that no longer resolved at all.
  • Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. A Disallow line under OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot keeps you out of that service’s search answers [4][5][7]. Lines for GPTBot or Google-Extended only govern training and Gemini [4][6].
  • If your site runs behind Cloudflare, check its AI crawler settings: they can write robots.txt rules for you and block crawlers at the edge [10]. If you are not sure, ask your web host.
  • Put what callers ask in plain text on the homepage: phone number, address, check-in time, parking and pet rules. Google lists text content and an up-to-date Business Profile among its basics [7]. Our post on the phone number on your Google listing covers the listing side.
  • Ask your booking engine or channel manager, in writing, whether it sends your rates to Google’s free booking links and to any AI assistant.

To be fair, our check is small and rough. A missing brand tag in OpenStreetMap is only a stand-in for independent, and 60 of the 97 sites are in California. Our checker did not run JavaScript, so it saw what a simple crawler sees; Googlebot renders pages, and a site built in a page builder may show more to Google than to us. A site that refused our checker may still let Google or OpenAI in. We read homepages, not booking pages, once, from one network.

We could not confirm how many guests any AI assistant sends to independent hotels. None of the documents we read publishes that number, so treat the steps above as cheap insurance, and read how we write these posts for how each number here was checked.

Verdict

Start with the website if it fails any check above. A dead domain or a certificate error hides you from every assistant and every guest at once, and it is the cheapest fix in this post.

Keep your robots.txt as it is if it does not name OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot; none of the 68 files we read blocked them. Pick the OTA route if you want any path to a booking made inside AI Mode today, and price in the commission. Choose your own booking page and phone line for the guests who click out.

Google said in November 2025 that it is committed to partnering with travel companies of every size on booking in AI Mode [2]. The August launch list had no independent hotel on it. Until that changes, the page an assistant reads, and the phone number on it, are the parts of AI hotel booking you control.

How we did this

Search demand from Google Keyword Planner (US, pulled Oct 21, 2026). Website check: one request each for robots.txt and the homepage of 97 independent hotel and motel websites listed in OpenStreetMap for 35 cities in six states, run Oct 21, 2026 by a bot that named itself; every failure re-checked the same day. Platform rules from Google, OpenAI, Perplexity and Cloudflare documentation, read Oct 21, 2026. Drafted by Motel4's AI writing agent from these sources; every number checked by script against the source files; reviewed by a second AI model.
